What after the E & H Action Plan 2004-2010 ?
Sunday, 02 January 2011 00:00

The 2d EPH Annual Meeting on Environnment and (Public) Health - research and prevention takes place in Berlin-Potsdam 7-9 November 2011. One big issue at the Annual Conference might be on a possible second cycle of an E & H Action Plan of the European COmmission and its priorities. Basis for discussion will be EPH Brussels Statement, released on 16 November 2010 and the FINAL REPORT of the European Commission on the Environment & Health Action Plan 2004-2010 of the COmmission. The EPH Annual Conference in Potsdam will highlight the state of the art on research and prevention in environment and public health. The Annual Meeting will also exploit the results of both EU funded and otherwise funded projects during the  E & H Action Plan 2004-2010 (EHAP) of the European Commission, as well as preliminary reports of new projects funded or not by the EU.

The High Level Open Expert Conference of 2010 and the future EPH Annual Meetings such as the 2d EPH Annual Meeting in Potsdam 2011 organized by the German EPH Partners, is split in three sections (horizontal line) at three consequent days. First on basic mechanisms and origins (etiology) of diseases including biomarkers and social determinants (starting on day 1 and running for 2-3 days); secondly on biomonitoring (both human biomonitoring - HBM and ecosystem biomonitoring - EBM), surveillance systems, data management, risk assessment, and evaluation on health benefits by preventive measures (starting on day 2 and running 2 days maximum); thirdly on evidence based prevention and E & H policy instruments, including involvment of various professions, local, urban and regional policy, and some global & development matters (running for 2 days maximum. Within the EPH framework a vertical line of cross-reference approach on specific thematic priority issues is developed. At each Annual Meeting they have both a basic research component and an (knowledge based) policy & prevention component. Join where people meet annually on Environment and Health within the European Union. The Berlin-Potsdam Conference will have a special status as it includes EPH business meetings in view of priority setting on European Union policy and the development of a Second Cycle of an E & H Action Plan of the EU.

The first EU Conference took place in 1993 just prior to the date that the first Treaty of the European Union came into force (Maastricht Treaty) leading to the European and Global EPH Declaration; the 2d Conference was hold in 2010 in the context of the Lisbon Treaty (which came into force on 1 December 2009) and in the context of the Agenda 2020 of the European Commission. Both later events take part in the same building in the heart of the European District of Brussels. They are as well held under the label of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union. The first European & Global Conference was carying out a mandate of follow-up of two Chapters of Agenda 21 (UNCED 1992) on behalf of WHO and with the support of UNEP, and other international and European organizations and committees.
